Hi,
I'm new to the addon phenomenon. I've only been using them for about 2 months now and I have a little question. How do I use the 81mm mortar? I can shoot but my shells just seem to fall in the same place over and over again, I can't aim...

Mortars basically require 2 men, one to give the target for example a move to command to certain place where you can read the metric distance and adjust the mortar and get the direction where to shoot. The mortar in FDF-package is movable by mouse if that is what you asked.

So one guy puts a "move to" command and the second guy points the mortar in the direction of the command and then the shells will fall there?

You can aim the mortar by using sight key (default v)

It is not that simple. He needs to use the gunsight in mortar and pick the correct metric distance, but if the distance is correct and the mortar is shooting at the right direction the shells will fall there.

Its actually fairly simple. My unit (RCIR) is starting to implement mortar training into the heavy-weapons section training course.

What you must do is first find Target Vector. This is the azimuth that the target is located on. Lets call it 270 (Due West) for the purpose of this exercise.

Bring up the mortar optics, and then bring up the compass. Orient so that the centerline is aligned with the compass azimuth.

You then must have the range handy. Since I operate mortars in three man teams (One to carry the tube and ammo, one to carry the base and provide security, and a third to spot for the team) you should get the range to target from your spotter. Once you have this data (For this demonstration, 250 meters) align the 250 meter range bar (its a horizontal line off the primary verticle alignment line) with the target. You then have the correct firing solution plotted. With practice, your team could break it down to:

"Range 250, Azimuth 270 - And then you want target type, such as - Infantry in the Open."

It takes practice. Keep in mind that the mortar sights are sensitive, and careful movement of the mouse is required to prevent slewing the tube about in a variety of directions.
